After battling the weather last week in their home stand against the St. Paul Saints, the Columbus Clippers headed west to take on the Indianapolis Indians in a six-game series beginning Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Clippers’ offense didn’t get started in the opener, posting only two hits in a 4-1 loss to the Indians.

Columbus starter Slade Cecconi (0-1) made his second rehab start of the season. Cecconi came to the Cleveland Guardians’ organization in a trade with Arizona for Bo Naylor during the offseason. He has yet to throw a pitch for Cleveland after suffering an oblique strain in March. On Tuesday, the right-hander suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk, and striking out two.

Mike Burrows (1-1) started for the Indians and gave up the Clippers’ run on a C.J. Kayfus deep ball in the second inning. Burrows went five innings and picked up his first win of the season, allowing only two hits. the Indianapolis bullpen threw four innings of no-hit shutout relief, with Isaac Mattson earning his second save.

Kayfus has been a strong addition for the Clippers since joining the team April 28 from Double-A Akron. In his five games with Columbus, he is hitting .375, with a double, two home runs, and three runs batted in. The other Clippers’ hit against the Indians was a Petey Halpin single.

The Clips have now lost six of their last seven games. Game two of their series with Indianapolis is Wednesday at Victory Field beginning at 1:35 p.m. Ryan Webb (1-1, 3.42) will take the hill for Columbus and face Bubba Chandler (2-0, 1.42) of the Indians.
