In July, it seemed as though the Columbus Clippers’ bullpen was allowing the team to have a chance down to the last out. In August, their starters have been providing strong outings with the bullpen struggling to get the last out.

On Saturday in St. Paul, the August script played out once again, as the Clippers won, 11-8. Columbus starter Triston McKenzie (2-1) went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, and striking out three. The Clippers’ relief staff made it exciting, giving up six runs in their four innings of work.

The offense for Columbus got started early, with six runs in the first three innings, and finished with a flury, adding five in the seventh and eighth innings. Estevan Florial had a career game, hitting a double and three home runs and knocking in seven runs. Kyle Manzardo hit his 15th homer of the season and had two RBIs.

Caleb Boushley (9-6) went four innings for St. Paul and was charged with the loss. He gave up three home runs and six of the Columbus runs.

The teams wind up their six-game series Sunday at CHS Field. Logan Allen (2-0) will take the mound for Columbus and will face Christian MacLeod in MacLeod’s Triple-A debut. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m.

Saturday Transaction: Starting pitcher Joey Cantillo was optioned back to Columbus from the Cleveland Guardians. Cantillo was a spot starter for Cleveland Friday in their 4-2 defeat at Minnesota. Cantillo gave up three runs in 5.2 innings and was pinned with the loss.
