The Ohio Dominican men’s golf team beat Findlay 5-0 in the medal round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Wednesday to capture the Panthers’ first-ever conference title. Eleven G-MAC teams battled through three rounds of stroke play previous to Tuesday’s head-to-head medal round.
Going into the championship 18 holes, the Oilers, who are ranked #36 in the country, were in the top spot. They led ODU by 28 strokes and third-place Tiffin by 35 strokes. Findlay was the only squad that shot a cumulative round under par and they did it twice in the three rounds played.
In the medal round, five players from each team square off individually. The better 18-hole score between the two is declared the winner. Ohio Dominican won all five matches against Findlay to take the crown. Here’s how it happened:
– Tyler Anderson (ODU – 70) defeated Tyler Valley (UF – 74) – 4 UP
– Jeremiah Bane (ODU – 72) defeated Cable Roth (UF- 76) – 4 UP
– Jackson Parnell (ODU – 75) defeated Brady Gazarek (UF – 76) – 1 UP
– Yadhu Urs (ODU – 70) defeated Colin Schadek (UF – 74) – 4 UP
– Bryce Cobb (ODU – 66) defeated Luke Metzger (UF – 70) – 4 UP
Two CBUS-area golfers participated in the title round, one for each team. ODU senior Jeremiah Bane is a graduate of Grove City High School and came back to Columbus after starting his collegiate career at Malone. Findlay’s Brady Gazarek is a junior from Delaware Hayes.
The best individual score for the tournament’s first three rounds was Findlay’s Colin Schadek, who was even par. ODU’s Yadhu Urs, who beat Schadek in the medal round, was the top Panther in individual play, finishing in fourth place at +6.
With three rounds under par in the championship round, the Panthers clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional in St. Joseph, Mo. to be held May 8-10. This is the second time that the men’s team is participating in the regional as a team.
