Connor Severson didn’t feel like the Olentangy Liberty boys volleyball team choked away a two-set lead in last year’s state final. Cincinnati Moeller just made enough plays in the final three sets to win the match.

Did the loss serve as motivation in the offseason? Absolutely. But it also serves as a reminder that there are no guarantees.

The Patriots reached the state tournament for the third consecutive season and the state championship match for the first time where they fell to the Crusaders 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-13 in the first OHSAA-sanctioned final.

“I don’t think we left anything on the table (against Moeller) – I know our guys gave it 110 (percent),” said Severson, a senior setter, who had 859 assists, 132 digs, 38 blocks and 34 aces last season. “Obviously, Moeller is a great team, but to not be able to (close it out) in the last match of the season hurts a lot.

“A lot of guys took the summer to reset. We just knew that we were going to work hard and here we are in March ready to get back at it.”

Coach David Hale agreed.

“I’ve always been a person who talks about giving your all every time you step on the court. Then, whatever the outcome is, you can keep your head held high,” the 19th-year coach said. “That’s absolutely the case last year. I don’t think we did things that lost that match. The other team made some plays and they beat us. It was two high-level teams playing against each other and they came out on top.”

Liberty has most of its lineup back for this season. But again, that doesn’t guarantee a fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament.

“We graduated two seniors (in Jack Sullenburger and Wes Davis) off that team,” Hale said. “Having lots of guys back – they want to get right back (to state).

“Nothing is guaranteed at all – especially when you’re talking about a state tournament run. You have to have players that are healthy at the right time … you could be going against players that are just on and you can’t do anything about it. Lots of things have to fall into place. So, we just have to make sure that we’re as prepared as we can be and then let the chips fall where they may.”

The Patriots, who open March 13 at home against Hilliard Darby, went 23-5 overall last season and 14-0 to win the OCC-Central Division. Liberty won its second consecutive league title and sixth overall, losing just one set in OCC-Central play.

“I think (coach Hale) is doing a good job making sure we stay humble and stay grateful and not take any match for granted,” Severson said. “Something he talks about a lot in practice is that being in a state championship is not a given.

“We have a lot of good teams in our region – a lot of good players and good teams in Columbus. So, we’ve got to just take it match to match because the state championship match is so far away. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. It’s a long season and a lot can happen.”

The Patriots will replace Sullenberger, a libero, who had 328 digs last season, with senior Austin Mallory.

Otherwise, senior outside hitters Caden Whiteside (407 kills, 54 aces, 143 digs) and Ryan Severson (99 digs, 54 kills, 25 aces) and senior middle hitters Jake Koch (232 kills, 94 blocks, 29 aces) and Jack Torson (167 kills, 62 blocks) are all back. Whiteside and Severson are six-rotation players.

Connor Severson has worked on becoming more physical at the net, both offensively and defensively.

“If there’s a ball tied up in the net … I know I can win a joust against whoever is on the other side of the net,” he said. “I know I can get blocks against the top hitters in the state. Using my offensive ability – maybe not in the swing – but dumping the ball over the net. I can use that a lot more and be able to get kills for us.”
