For the third straight day in Indianapolis, the margin of victory for the games between the Columbus Clippers and the Indians has been one run. On Friday at Victory Field, Indy came out on top, 3-2, after scoring all of their runs in the sixth inning.
The Clippers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when C.J. Kayfus knocked in Kyle Datres from third with a sacrifice fly. It was Kayfus’s fifth RBI since joining Columbus in late April from the Double-A Akron Rubber Ducks.
The three runs that Indianapolis scored in the sixth came against Columbus reliever Will Dion (1-3), who suffered his third loss of the season. Clippers’ starter Vince Velasquez pitched well, going four scoreless innings on five hits and striking out six.
Columbus cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth when Cody Huff went deep for the second time this season. It was his 16th run batted in of the campaign. The Clippers threatened in the ninth, but one baserunner was picked off and another stranded.
The Indians now lead the series three games to one. The teams play again on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Parker Messick (1-1, 3.25) will start for Columbus and face Thomas Harrington (1-2, 6.16).
