OSU beats Ball State in key MIVA contest

The #18-ranked Ohio State men’s volleyball team (13-10, 8-5) hosted the #15 Ball State Cardinals (17-10, 9-5) in MIVA action Thursday at the Covelli Center and came away with an impressive 3-1 win.

The Buckeyes got off to a strong start, downing the Cardinals 25-14 in the opening set. Ball State responded with a tight 25-23 win in the second set. After that, Ohio State would battle to regain control of the match. 

Trailing 23-21 in set number three, OSU outscored the Cardinals, 6-2, to win 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, the Buckeyes dominated on their way to a 25-19 win and captured the match 3-1.

Freshman Stanislaw Chacinski led all players with 19 kills. Once again, junior Shane Wetzel had an outstanding all-around game. He paced the Bucks with 10 digs and six aces, to go with 18 kills and two assists. Freshman setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez recorded 55 assists.

The Buckeyes wind up their regular-season home schedule Saturday against the #14 Lewis Flyers (20-7, 10-4), who have won four matches in a row. This year’s seniors will be recognized before the match, which begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Covelli Center.
