The 4th-ranked Ohio State field hockey squad hosted the No. 17 Penn State Nittany Lions Friday at the Buckeye Varsity Field in an afternoon tilt. There was no score at the half, then the Buckeyes poured it on, scoring four times in the second half to win 4-0. OSU’s first three goals came in a six-minute span in the third quarter.
The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard when Makenna Webster chipped in a rebound in front of the net just 1:18 into the third quarter. Hallie Brobst added a goal two minutes later after snaking through the defense on the dribble. The third goal in the quarter came when Olivia Wallace took a pass from Loryn Jordan along the baseline and sent it into the cage.
Webster recorded the final score of the match, with less than two minutes left to play, when she converted on a penalty stroke. It was her team-leading 12th goal of the season. She also leads OSU with nine assists.
With the win, the Buckeyes (10-1, 2-1) have five victories over ranked teams this season: No. 10 Syracuse, No. 13 Louisville, No. 17 Penn State, No. 18 Old Dominion, and No. 20 Albany. The shutout was the fifth of the season, the 16th of goalkeeper Abby Danson’s career.
Ohio State hosts Kent State in a non-conference match Sunday at Buckeye Varsity Field with the opening face-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
