The #3-ranked Ohio State field hockey team (12-1) traveled to College Park to take on the #8-ranked Maryland Terrapins (9-4) Friday evening. The Terps used the home field advantage to lead in most offensive categories, except the number of goals scored, as the Buckeyes came away with a 2-1 win.
Despite being outshot 13-2, Ohio State’s defense kept things knotted up at 0-0 through three quarters. OSU goalkeeper, Abby Danson, recorded a season-high nine saves in the game. The scoreless tie through three frames was not a surprise. Maryland and Ohio State are #3 and #4 in the nation, respectively, in goals allowed.
The fourth quarter would see both teams get on the board. The Buckeyes were first, when Katie Fichtner scored off an insertion by Erin Little on a penalty corner with 7:37 left. It was Fichtner’s sixth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Maryland’s Annemijn Klijnhout scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner opportunity.
With the score tied at 1-1, the clock ticked down to the last minute of the fourth quarter. On yet another penalty corner chance for Ohio State, Camryn Forgash’s shot was blocked, but Makenna Webster’s attempt off the rebound found the goal with just 29 seconds left. Webster has four game-winning goals this season, 12 in her career.
The 2-1 victory was the first win for Ohio State in 21 tries against Maryland. Next up for the Buckeyes is a game in Piscataway, N.J. against Rutgers Sunday. The action gets started at noon.
