After a seesaw battle through the first three quarters, the Ohio State women’s basketball team found themselves trailing West Virginia, 77-70, with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter of the title game of the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship in the Bahamas Wednesday.
After chipping away at the lead, the Buckeyes jumped in front, 81-80, with 24 seconds remaining on a shot from Elsa Lemmilä. Lemmilä, a sophomore from Espoo Finland, was a major part of the comeback. The 6’4 center had seven rebounds, three blocked shots, and four critical points in 20 minutes played off the bench.
Ohio State closed out the game with a defensive stop, including a blocked shot by Kylee Kitts, and two free throws from Ava Watson to beat the #20/21-ranked Mountaineers, 83-81. WVU made a free throw with under a second left on the clock.
Jaloni led the Buckeyes with 22 points, while Bryn Martin added 16 and Chance Gray had 15. Gray also posted seven assists. The Ohio State defense kept the WVU shooters in check, as the Mountaineers went 27-56 (48.2%) from the field and only 4-17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc. West Virginia did lead in rebounding 38-28.
The Buckeyes, now 4-1 on the season, return home for a non-conference game against Niagara Sunday. The tipoff at Value City Arena is slated for 1:00 p.m. and can be seen on the Big Ten+ network.
