The Columbus Blue Jackets were looking to salvage at least one win as they wrapped up their four-game Western road trip. They did just that as they rallied in the second period to tie their game at Utah Sunday, then win it in overtime, 3-2. The tying and winning goals came on power play opportunities.

The Blue Jackets took the lead early in the first period. At the 2:47 mark, Mikael Pyythia, in just his third game with the team this season, scored on a wrist shot from the left circle after carrying the puck into the offensive zone. Jack McBain scored late in the opening frame for the Mammoth to tie the score before the first intermission.

Mikhail Sergachev gave Utah the lead just 1:02 into the middle period. Sergachev sent one through traffic from just inside the blue line that beat Columbus goaltender Jet Greaves stick-side. Greaves was back in the net Sunday after sitting out Saturday’s game with Colorado. He ended the afternoon stopping 25 of 27 shots (.926).

Charlie Coyle tallied his seventh goal of the season with 1:29 left in the second period to knot the score at 2-2. On the power play chance, Coyle took a pass in the left circle and sent a shot off the shoulder of Mammoth goalie Vitek Vanecek. Coyle batted the rebound out of the air and into the crease where Adam Fantilli poked it under Vanacek. As it slid onto the goal line, Coyle jammed it home.

Neither team got on the board in the third period, setting up overtime. At the 19:36 mark of the third period, Utah’s Daniil But went to the penalty box for tripping Fantilli. As a result, Columbus began OT with a 4-on-3 advantage.

It was Dmitri Voronkov that scored the winner at 1:01. The Blue Jackets were on the attack and did a good job keeping the puck in the Utah zone. After making a pass from the half wall, Voronkov beat his man to the net where Zach Werenski found him, allowing him to redirect the puck from close range.

The Jackets return home for two games at Nationwide Arena this week. On Tuesday, they host the Calgary Flames with the Vancouver Canucks coming to town on Thursday. Both contests get underway at 7:00 p.m.
