In a tale of commitment, professionalism, and sheer dedication, Columbus Crew forward Christian Ramirez showcased his unwavering focus during the recent MLS Eastern Conference semifinal match against Orlando City SC, even as his wife went into labor thousands of miles away in Ohio.

The soccer world witnessed a remarkable display of resilience from Ramirez as he stepped onto the pitch, fully aware of the life-changing moments unfolding simultaneously off the field. While most players would understandably prioritize being with their families during such significant moments, Ramirez’s commitment to his team and the game shone brightly on this unprecedented occasion.

“For me, it’s unbelievable. He’s unbelievable,” said midfielder Mo Farsi during the midweek press conference. “He had the same situation as me; He didn’t play for a while, then come in and make a difference and his wife was in labor, and just came and scored.”

“I think that just shows how mentally he is on another level. He’s a very nice guy so I’m happy for him.”

Fans were unaware of the upcoming life changing moment for the former Aberdeen forward, until a video posted by the MLS after the 2-0 win, showed Ramirez wandering the field before claiming, “Get me home to my wife so we can have our kid. My wife’s in labor [laughter] well she should be, hopefully.”

In an era where athletes often find themselves at the intersection of personal and professional responsibilities, Ramirez’s decision to play was a testament to his exceptional professionalism and commitment to the Columbus Crew.

Ramirez, who got the game winning google in the 93rd minute in extra time, was overwhelmed by the events of both winning, and being miles away from his wife.

“It’s hard to put into words. We thought the baby was coming on Tuesday so we were in the hospital for four-to-five hours, and they sent us home, told us ‘false alarm’ so we’re on baby watch. Guys were asking me if I was going to come and make the trip because of it, but she told me to just go so, I hope that goal was special for her, for the little one but I know for myself it was really special,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez’s goal would prove to be the game winner before Cucho Hernandez sealed the deal with a 50+ yard goal to lift Columbus to victory, booking their spot in the Eastern Conference Final against in-state rival FC Cincinnati for a third edition of the Hell Is Real Derby.

You can watch the Eastern Conference Final on MLS Seasonpass on Apple TV. Kickoff from TQL Stadium is slated for 6pm.
