It was “Groundhog Day” for the Columbus Clippers in Rochester Saturday. For the third night in a row, the Clippers gave up a lead in the late innings and watched the Red Wings celebrate a walk-off victory. On Saturday, Rochester scored five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game, then homered in the ninth for a 7-6 win.
Columbus starter Parker Messick had thrown well in his last five outings, moving his ERA down to 2.95 coming into Saturday’s contest. In another solid performance, he went five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks, while striking out six. The offense supported his effort with six runs in the first four innings.
Johnathan Rodriguez and Brayan Rocchio both homered for Columbus. Rodriguez moved his team-high RBI mark to 26. Rocchio has now knocked in 17 runs in his 17 games with the Clippers this season. C.J. Kayfus and Milán Tolentino also drive in runs for Columbus against the Red Wings.
Ryan Webb (2-4) took the loss for the Clippers. It was the left-hander’s first relief appearance since April 13. He has started seven games since then. Webb gave up all seven Red Wings’ runs, six of them on four home runs. The final long ball came in the ninth when Nick Schnell went over the right field wall to lead off the home frame.
The Clippers will try once again to grab a win in Rochester in the finale of their six-game series. Joey Cantillo (NR) will make his first start for Columbus after being with the Cleveland Guardians so far this season. Chase Solesky (2-4, 4.50) will take the mound for Rochester looking for the sweep.
