Excelling at taking things in stride has paid off for both the Dublin Scioto and Olentangy Orange girls volleyball teams.

The Irish were the No. 1 seed and the Pioneers were the second seed for the Division I district tournament, but they haven’t met in a regular-season match this season – until now.

At 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at Hilliard Darby, they’ll play for the regional championship after riding strong starts to wins in regional semifinals Thursday night at the same site.

“We’ve wanted to play Scioto the whole entire year, and it’s been a highly anticipated game for everybody,” Orange senior outside hitter Lily Barron said. “Our biggest goal for our seniors is to make it to state. That’s all we’ve really wanted.”

Neither team has won a regional championship, although the Pioneers have made it to four previous regional finals.

With a 25-13, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17 win over Pickerington Central in the second regional semifinal at Darby, Orange improved to 24-3.

The regional champion will play Toledo St. Ursula or Avon at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in a state semifinal at Wright State.

“This is our fifth time (making a regional final), and it’s been a goal that we’ve worked for,” said Katie Duy, who has been Orange’s coach since 2015. “What I appreciate about this group is that they don’t get rattled. They’re going to make mistakes, but they’re a group that’s all played high-level club and they’ve all been in high-level situations and have been able to rise up to the challenge in those moments.”

Pickerington Central was making its first regional appearance since 1994 — when the district still had only one school — despite having just two key seniors. One of those, however, is outside hitter Myriah Massey, who will play women’s beach volleyball for Florida State.

“The nerves just got the best of us,” said Central coach Jeannie Krueger, whose team finished 22-4. “They’re athletes and they won’t give up. They’ll fight to the end, and that’s what they did. Pickerington was its own school in 1994 when they last won a district title, so it’s all new to all of our kids. What we talked about in the locker room is that you don’t get good at big games until you play in big games.”

That’s become commonplace for the Pioneers considering they had been to six consecutive regional tournaments before losing in a district final last season.

Barron, who has committed to Houston, finished with 15 kills and 22 digs to lead the Pioneers.

In the fourth set, sophomore Emma Cugino had two serving aces during a 5-0 run that gave Orange a 24-16 lead.

Sophomore setter Izzy Scholvin finished with 23 assists and sophomore right-side hitter/outside hitter Delaney McAtee had six kills for the Pioneers.

Those performances helped set up the matchup against Scioto, which defeated Watterson 25-14, 25-16, 25-22 to improve to 27-0.

The Eagles, who have been to six consecutive regionals, finished 17-10.

“Honestly, we played very relaxed,” said Jackie Wilson, who is in her 14th season as the Irish’s coach. “Sometimes when you get later in the tournament, it’s easy to get tense and feel like you have to play perfectly, but I think we just played really relaxed and trusted each other. That showed tonight.”

Senior Alec Rothe, a Florida commit who competed for the U.S. National team earlier this fall, finished with 14 kills to lead Scioto.

“We have not played Orange, but we scrimmaged them early,” Wilson said. “The strategy is about focusing on our side, playing relaxed and focusing on our training. We don’t try to overcoach, over-game plan or psyche ourselves out of what we have to do. We just try to take care of business on our side and we’ll be happy regardless of the outcome.”
