After rolling over the Indianapolis Indians, 12-0, Saturday at Huntington Park, the Columbus Clippers’ offense stayed hot, but the visiting Indianapolis Indians kicked into gear, coming from behind to win, 10-9, in Sunday’s series finale. The Clippers’ Travis Bazzana hit his fourth home run in the last four games.
The Indians got off to a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth inning. Columbus put a run on the board in the fourth when Christian Cairo singled to drive in Milan Tolentino. Indy responded with two runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead and knock Clippers starter John Means out of the ballgame.
Columbus then scored seven straight runs, four in the fifth and three in the sixth. Johnathan Rodríguez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, his 12th long ball of the season. Cairo picked up his 2nd RBI of the game with a single later in the inning. In the sixth, Bazzana went deep with two men on and the Clippers led 8-5.
Indianapolis responded with five runs in the seventh against Columbus reliever Trevor Stephan (1-2), including home runs from Jase Bowen and Shawn Ross. Stephen was charged with the loss. The Clippers managed to score once more on Cooper Ingle’s first home run with the team, but that was all Columbus could muster, falling 10-9.
The Clippers get Monday off, traveling to St. Paul, Minn. to take on the Saints in a six-game series beginning Tuesday. Austin Peterson (3-4, 4.22) will get the start for Columbus. Fans can listen to the action from the Land of 10,000 Lakes on Fox Sports 920 AM. Ryan Mitchell will have the call.
