The Columbus Clippers just never got their offense going Tuesday at Huntington Park in this season’s home opener, falling to the St. Paul Saints, 5-0.
St. Paul starter Zebby Matthews (1-0) tossed the first five innings, allowing only one hit and picking up the win. Will Dion (0-1) started for Columbus, but had some bad luck, giving up two unearned runs in the first and ending his brief appearance with a loss.
The Clippers managed only five hits on the evening, but newcomer Kyle Datres had two of them. Datres is now hitting .429 in the early going. Reliever Andrew Walters was a bright spot for Columbus, throwing a perfect inning, including two strikeouts.
On Wednesday, the teams play the second game of their six-game series beginning at 6:15 p.m. Left-handed pitcher Parker Messick will be on the mound for the Clippers, getting his first Triple-A start. Andrew Morris will start for St. Paul.
