The Columbus Clippers were coming off an impressive home series against the Memphis Redbirds, in which they won five of six games. Hopes were high as the Syracuse Mets came to town to continue the homestand. Instead, the Mets put together a convincing 7-1 win.

Syracuse got the scoring starting in the first inning on Mike Brosseau’s sacrifice fly. The Clippers responded in the bottom of the frame when George Valera hit a bases-empty home run, his tenth roundtripper of the season.

After that, it was all Mets. In the second inning, they pushed a run across helped by two Clippers’ fielding errors. They added a run in the fourth on a Luisangel Acuña sac fly. In the fifth, the gates opened for the Mets’ offense. They put together five hits, including home runs from Luke Ritter and Mike Brosseau, and scored four times to seal the victory.

Mets’ starter Mike Vasil (5-6) was impressive, going seven innings and allowing only one run on four Columbus hits, walking two and striking out eight, to earn the win. Columbus starter Will Dion (2-3) was pinned with the loss.

The Clippers were without infielder José Tena, who was traded by the Cleveland Guardians, along with infielder Rafael Ramirez Jr. and left-handed pitcher Alex Clemmy, to the Washington Nationals for outfielder Lane Thomas.

The teams are back in action Tuesday with an afternoon tilt beginning at 12:05 p.m. Two left-handers will start on the mound: Joey Lucchesi (5-5) for the Mets and Doug Nikhazy (2-1) for the Clippers.
