Thornton leads Ohio State over Mastodons

The Ohio State men’s basketball team played its second game of the season, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne at Value City Arena Friday. Like Monday’s opponent, IU Indy, the Mastodons are members of the Horizon League. The Buckeyes, behind senior Bruce Thornton, rolled to a 94-69 win to go to 2-0 in the season’s first week.

Thornton posted a career-high 38 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. His shooting effort was phenomenal. He was 14-17 from the field generally, 5-8 from outside the arc, and 5-5 at the free throw line.

Sophomore John Mobley Jr., a Reynoldsburg native, scored 19 points, while Santa Clara transfer Christoph Tilly, a senior, added 15. Tilly led the Buckeyes with 28 points in the their win Monday.

Freshman Mathieu Grujicic, who grew up in Berlin, Germany, scored his first points on a three-pointer, his only shot attempt of the night. Ohio State shot 34-51 (66.7%) overall and 16-28 (57.1%) from distance.

The Buckeyes play at home again next Tuesday when they host Appalachian State, a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Mountaineers are led by grad guard Kasen Jennings, who transferred from South Florida before this season.Â
