Three area baseball teams head to state tourney

The OHSAA baseball regional finals have been decided for all CBUS-area teams and three – Olentangy, New Albany, and Newark Catholic – are on their way to the state tournament to be played at Canton’s Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium and Akron’s Canal Park next week. 

Division I’s Olentangy Braves beat Grove City, 4-2, at Beavers Field in Lancaster Thursday to advance to the state semi-finals. The Braves (26-7) will play the Lakota West Firebirds (24-8) on Saturday, June 14 at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton beginning at 4:00 p.m. 

In Division II, after beating Big Walnut, 6-0, Thursday at Grove City High School, New Albany (20-9) is moving on to a state semi-final match-up with Amherst Steele (23-2). The Eagles and Comets will play on Friday, June 13 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.

Newark Catholic (21-9) will play in the Division VII state semis against Tiffin Calvert (27-3) on Thursday, June 12 at Canal Park in Akron with the first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. The Green Wave reached the state tournament by downing South Webster, 9-3, Thursday at Ohio University’s Wren Stadium.
