The #6-ranked Ohio State football team got back on the winning side with a lopsided 59-3 win against the Kent State Golden Flashes Saturday at Ohio Stadium. During the contest, junior wideout Jeremiah Smith set the Ohio State receiving yards record, passing Michael Jenkins. Smith now has 2,958 yards in his three years at OSU. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s game:

1.    There wasn’t much intrigue in Saturday’s contest other than Smith setting the first of three career receiving records expected to wear his name this season. Next week against Illinois, it is likely that he’ll be the first to go over 3,000 receiving yards after supplanting Michael Jenkins Saturday for the top spot. Currently in fourth place, Smith needs 26 catches to pass Emeka Egbuka, who has 205 receptions. Smith needs seven touchdowns to go past Chris Olave’s 35 scoring catches.

2.   It looks as though, at least this week, true freshman quarterback Luke Fahey has earned the backup spot ahead of sophomore Tavien St. Clair. Both played Saturday against the Flashes, but Fahey was first off the bench and got more time under center, going 4-for-5 for 141 yards, a touchdown and an interception. St. Clair attemped only one pass and it was picked off.

3.   Two local products ran the ball for the Buckeyes in the second half. Freshman Favour Akih, a Delaware Hayes alum, had eight carries for 13 yards, while junior Stanley Jackson Jr., a Westerville North grad and Marshall transfer, toted the rock twice for eight yards. Jackson Jr. was a quarterback in high school for the Warriors, like his father Stanley Sr., who started for Ohio State at that position in 1996 and 1997.
