The Columbus Clippers gave up a couple of unearned runs Tuesday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in their series opener and fell 3-1 in front of a large Dime-a-Dog Night crowd at Huntington Park. Here are our three takeaways from Tuesday’s tilt:
1. Columbus starter Austin Peterson deserved a better fate. He went 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and three walks, while striking out 12. That’s right, 12 Ks in the 17 outs he recorded. Unfortunately, he was up against another hurler who had an equally solid night. Brendan Beck gave up the Clippers’ only run on three hits in his six innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
2. The Clippers are just not hitting the ball consistently. They managed only four hits Tuesday, only one of which went for extra bases – a double from Cooper Ingle. Kody Huff leads the team (those who have a decent number of ABs) with a batting average of .289. In the loss to the RailRiders in the opener, the Clips walked just twice, but struck out 12 times.
3. Dayan Frias has a really good arm. It’s worth saying again more emphatically. Dayan Frias has a really, really good arm. In the top of the ninth, with Ernesto Martinez Jr. on third base and one away, Kenedy Corona hit a fly ball to mid-centerfield. Frias caught it coming toward the infield and let loose with a cannon shot that went to catcher Bo Naylor without a hop. It beat Martinez by enough that Naylor had to wait for him. Dayan Frias has a really, really, really good arm (see below).

Columbus and SWB are back at it Wednesday with the second game of their series. RHP Pedro Avila (2-6, 7.08) will take the hill for the Clippers. For the RailRiders, it will be RHP Alexander Cornielle (NR), who will be making his first Triple-A start this season. The first pitch at Huntington Park is set for 7:05 p.m.
