The Columbus Clippers took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Nolan Jones, his seventh of the season, but the visiting Omaha Storm Chasers scored the next five runs and held on for a 6-4 win at Huntington Park Thursday afternoon. Here are our three takeaways from Thursday’s day game:
1. The Clippers managed only five hits in Thursday’s contest, although they reached first base nine times via the walk. No one for the Clips had more than one hit, so really Columbus was fortunate to push across four runs. The Clippers, however, are averaging six runs a game in the first three contests of the series, so no reason to think Thursday’s hits output is a trend.
2. Gabriel Arias is in Columbus on a rehab assignment from the Cleveland Guardians. The 26-year-old injured a hamstring in April and is just now able to take the field. He had only one at-bat Thursday before being replaced at shortstop by Milan Tolentino. Arias was competing in Cleveland for playing time at short with Brayan Rocchio who has put together a solid season so far for the Guards. It will be interesting to see the role that a fully healthy Arias will be asked to play.
3. Cooper Ingle had another good game for the Clippers. Despite committing an error on a throw from behind the plate, he was 1-3 with another two walks and a run scored. The #3 Guardians prospect leads the team with 35 BBs in 37 games and is now hitting .317 with an OBS of 1.079. He was 3-3 in ABS (Automated Ball-Strike) challenges, which has been another strong point in his defensive game.
