The Columbus Clippers were only able to record three hits in their 8-3 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens at Huntington Park Thursday. In the last two games against the Mud Hens, Columbus has only seven hits to their credit, all singles. Here are our three takeaways from Thursday’s contest:

1.    After 30 games of International League play, the Clippers have the fifth best team batting average out of the IL’s 20 teams. The past couple of days at Huntington Park tells another tale. Four hits on Wednesday, just three on Thursday. No extra base hits on either day. Had the Mud Hens not committed three errors in their 8-3 win, the result would have looked worse. Probably not time to worry yet, but yikes.

2.   The Mud Hens pitched by committee Thursday, which made the Columbus inability to hit seem worse. Six different hurlers took the mound. The only one to give up any runs, Yoniel Curet, did not allow a hit and saw all three Toledo errors committed behind him in the infield. The Clippers, who have been striking out more than once an inning so far this season, fanned 11 times against the flock of Mud Hens.

3.   There was a bright spot at the plate for the Clippers. Dayan Frias had a solid game, going 1-for-2 officially, with two walks and a stolen base. Frias now has eight stolen bases, tied for second on the team behind Petey Halpin, who has nine. The 23-year-old, usually in the infield, was in left field on Thursday to add a position to his defensive arsenal.

Columbus and Toledo are back at it Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at Huntington Park. The Clippers will try to even up the series at two games apiece. RHP Pedro Avila (1-2, 8.20) takes the hill for Columbus. RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (1-2, 4.86) gets the ball for the Mud Hens.
