The Columbus Clippers got their second win of the series at St. Paul Saturday. Both offenses were clicking, but the Clippers had the better of it, coming away with an 11-7 win. Reliever Jack Leftwich picked up the win for Columbus. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s game:
1. It has been a dangerous combination for Columbus this week against the Saints. The Clippers’ pitching staff is 19th out of the International League’s 20 clubs in earned run average. Columbus has a combined ERA of 5.79. Only Iowa is worse (6.06). The league leader is Buffalo (3.72). The St. Paul hitters, after going deep twice Saturday, now have 73 home runs on the season. That’s the best in professional baseball. The New York Yankees are third with 67.
2. Cooper Ingle had a day Saturday at CHS Stadium. The Cleveland Guardians’ No. 4 prospect went 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs scored, and three batted in. His batting average is now .348. On the defensive side, besides having to tough out too many baseballs that found him on foul tips, he threw out three runners on the basepaths. Making a case for himself.
3. Daniel Espino threw one impressive inning in relief for the Clippers. He did not allow a run, gave up one hit, and struck out the side. He hit 99mph+ six times on his fastball, 100mph+ twice. His slider ranged from 91mph+ to 93mph+. The only hit he gave up came on one of the “slower” sliders. When the 25-year-old has his control honed in, he is as good as there is.

Columbus and St. Paul finish up their series Sunday at CHS Stadium beginning at 3:07 p.m. EDT. Clippers’ starter, LHP Ryan Webb (0-4, 9.55), will be looking for his first win of the season. St. Paul will call on RHP John Klein (1-1, 6.93). The Clips return home Tuesday with a game against the Louisville Bats.
