The Columbus Clippers took an early 3-0 lead in their home game against Toledo Tuesday, only to see the Mud Hens respond with six runs. The Clips scored four in the bottom of the seventh and held on for an 8-6 win at Huntington Park. Here are our three takeaways from the series-opener:

1.   The Clippers’ offensive attack did not wane after giving up a three-run lead in the sixth and seventh innings. Petey Halpin knocked in a run in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, Columbus put together four hits, along with two walks, a Toledo error, and a sacrifice fly from Halpin that put them ahead going to the eighth. All in all, the Clips had 15 hits, including two doubles from newcomer Maick Collado.

2.   Tanner Burns came out of the bullpen for Columbus and picked up his second win of the season, going 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball and allowing one hit while striking out two. Codi Heuer blanked the Mud Hens in the ninth, serving up just one hit, and picked up his second save. Heuer has a stingy 0.90 ERA in 10.0 innings pitched.

3.   The Clippers were 4-for-4 on ABS challenges Tuesday. Catcher Kody Huff was successful three of those times, twice to protect his pitchers by reversing a called ball that was a strike. He also avoided a punch-out at the plate by contesting a third-strike call that was actually off the edge of the dish.

The Clippers and the Mud Hens play the second game of their six-game series Wednesday with the first pitch slated for 6:15 p.m. at Huntington Park. LHP Ryan Webb (0-2, 7.50), who was originally scheduled to go Tuesday, will climb the hill for Columbus, while RHP Dylan File (2-0, 4.50) gets the nod for Toledo.

Webb was replaced by Austin Peterson in the series opener. It was Peterson’s first appearance of the season. The 6’6 right-hander had been sidelined with a triceps strain since early in spring training. He had a successful debut, going three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while striking out four.
