The Columbus Clippers hit five home runs in their series-opener against the St. Paul Saints Tuesday at Huntington Park and cruised to a 19-3 win before the home faithful, who were also enjoying Dime-a-Dog Night. The Clippers capped their night at the plate with seven runs in the eighth inning. Here are our three takeaways from Tuesday’s offensive onslaught:

1.    The entire lineup got into the act for the Clippers with each batter getting at least one hit and no one getting more than two. Five different players hit home runs. David Fry led the RBI parade with five, while Milan Tolentino added four in one swing. More on that in a moment. Fry’s home run in the first inning was the sixth in his eight games back in Columbus.

2.   Austin Peterson picked up the win, his third of the season, going five innings and allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out six. The 26-year-old has now recorded 91 Ks in 86.2 innings pitched this season. The final three relievers for Columbus – Jake Miller, Ryan Borucki, and Daniel Espino – each went a scoreless inning.

3.   Milan Tolentino hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to conclude the scoring for the Clippers. He hit it against shortstop turned reliever Tanner Schobel who was pressed into duty in the out-of-control contest. Schobel delivered a steady diet of eephus pitches (a super-slow toss with a looping arc). Tolentino took the third one he saw, which was recorded as a 35.3 mph slider, way over the right-field wall.

Columbus and St. Paul are back on the diamond at Huntington Park Wednesday with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. RHP Trenton Denholm (9-4, 4.78) will climb the hill for the Clippers. The Saints will start RHP Ricky Castro (3-2, 5.02). It’s WWE Night at the ballpark. The Creed Brothers will be on the concourse for photos.
