After being “weathered” out on Saturday, the Columbus Clippers and Buffalo Bisons played a doubleheader to conclude the series at Sahlen Field Sunday. Both games were scheduled for seven innings. The Clips fell, 6-3, in game one, but Juan Benjamin’s two-run homer in the eighth inning of the series finale gave Columbus a 6-4 win to salvage a split, both on the day and in the series. Here are our three takeaways from the twin-bill:
1. Nolan Jones started with some fervor this season. The 27-year-old outfielder was drafted by Cleveland in the 2nd round of the MLB draft in 2016 out of Holy Ghost Prep in Bensalem, Penn. He was traded after the 2022 season to Colorado for Juan Brito, who is now up on the Guardians’ roster. He came back to Cleveland in a trade for Tyler Freemen in 2025. He has played 349 games in the Big Leagues. His average with the Clippers dipped a bit in April, but with today’s performance, he’s back up to .304.
2. The Cleveland Guardians recalled reliever Colin Holderman Sunday after a week with the Clippers. The right-hander made six appearances with Columbus in his short stint. In his 9.2 innings of work out of the pen, he was 2-0 with a 7.45 ERA. He walked only two and struck out 13. His last appearance was his best. On Wednesday in Buffalo, he went three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
3. The Clippers have been calling up infielders from within the Cleveland system with frequency over the past couple of weeks. First, it was Benjamin, then Kevin Rivas and Maick Collado. All are 23-years-old. Combined, they have three games of experience at the Double-A level. The trio have all shown glimpses over the past week at the plate, the biggest of which was Benjamin’s winning home run Sunday.

The Clippers travel back to Columbus Monday so that they can begin a six-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens Tuesday. LHP Ryan Webb (0-2, 7.50) will get the start in the opener for Columbus, which begins at 6:15 p.m. Of course, Tuesday’s home contest means another Dime-a-Dog Night at Huntington Park.
