The Columbus Clippers scored in five different innings at Toledo Thursday to win going away 10-3. Lots of timely hitting and another outstanding middle relief performance from Trenton Denholm added up to a an easy victory at Fifth Third Field. Here are our three takeaways from Thursday’s romp:
1. Cooper Ingle was the Clippers’ DH Thursday, but stayed in the lead-off spot where he has been productive. He went 2-for-6, belting his eighth home run of the season and knocking in four runs. Columbus recorded 17 hits in the outing, with everyone in the lineup having at least one. The Clippers were paced by Nolan Jones’ four base knocks. Angel Genoa, who has dipped a bit at the plate lately, had three hits.
2. OK, it’s officially a thing. After starting on the mound six times to begin the season, Trenton Denholm has now made four consecutive middle relief appearances. He went the final five innings Thursday, blanking the Mud Hens on just one hit and striking out four. In those four outings, the 26-year-old has thrown 15.1 innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits with 14 Ks. Oh, and in that role he has three wins and a save. Officially a thing indeed.
3. The only negative thing about Thursday’s game was the sheer number of strikeouts at the plate for both squads. The Clippers, who are averaging just fewer than nine per game, whiffed 11 times. Toledo batters also struck out 11 times. Here’s the rub. Columbus is 11th worst in the International League. That means that ten other teams are averaging more Ks. Durham “leads” the parade with almost 11 per game. Yikes!
Cleveland #Guardians 26yr old RHP prospect Trenton Denholm picked up the win tonight for Columbus allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings of work striking out four Toledo batters.
