The Columbus Clippers scored single runs in the sixth and eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie with the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday and come away with a 6-4 win to take the series four games to two. Leading off the game, Cooper Ingle hit his ninth home run of the season. Here are our three takeaways from Sunday’s series finale:
1. The Columbus bullpen had a great day to finish out the series. After starter Logan Allen surrendered four runs, only two of which were earned, in his 3.1 innings or work, the Clipper relief corps went the rest of the way without allowing a run and only two hits. Jake Miller (2-0) was out of the pen first and earned the win, going 2.2 innings. He was followed by Steven Pérez, Andrew Walters, and Tanner Burns, all of who went a scoreless inning. Burns picked up his fifth save of the season.
2. The Clippers scored four runs in the first inning, but Toledo tied things up with a run in the second and three in the fourth. Each of the Clips’ final two runs came on heads up base running. With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Kody Huff hit a ground ball to Toledo shortstop Max Burt, but the Mud Hens could not turn the double play with all of the runners hustling and a run scored. In the eighth, with Clippers at the corners, Bo Naylor scored from third on a double steal to add some extra cushion.
3. Columbus continues to find a way to get three catchers into the game. Prospects Cooper Ingle and Kody Huff are solid defensive players and have been hitting the ball well. They were in left field and at third base, respectively, on Sunday. The third backstop, Bo Naylor, was the one behind the plate as he tries to earn his way back to Cleveland after spending the last three years with the Guardians.
