The Columbus Clippers took a 5-0 lead at Toledo Wednesday and went on to beat the Mud Hens 6-3 to even their series at a game apiece. The Clippers managed only six hits, but were patient enough to walk 10 times, as well as capitalize on Toledo’s two errors. Here are our three takeaways from Wednesday’s game:

1.   Columbus got off to a great start Wednesday. On the offensive side, it was a bit unconventional. They put together their first five runs without base hit RBIs. They came in on a fielder’s choice, a sac fly, a bases loaded walk, a steal of home, and another groundout. In addition to that, the Clips got five scoreless innings from starter Kolby Allard who allowed only two hits and while striking out five. All of that provided enough cushion to withstand a three-run rally from Toledo.

2.   The Clippers’ three relievers coming down the stretch – Jack Leftwich, Andrew Walters, and Franco Aleman – combined to throw 2.2 innings of shutout baseball without allowing a hit. Aleman, who picked up his fourth save of the season, still has not permitted an earned run this year for Columbus. He has gone 15.0 innings in 16 appearances, striking out 22.

3.   Three catchers were in the lineup Wednesday for the Clippers. Cooper Ingle, who was in the leadoff spot, was the designated hitter. Kody Huff, who has become a versatile defender, was at third base. He has also played first base and in the outfield. The backstop against Toledo this day was Bo Naylor, who just arrived after spending time at the Guardians’ Arizona facilities following his demotion from Cleveland.

Columbus and Toledo play the third game of their scheduled six-game series Thursday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Austin Peterson (0-2, 3.98) will take the mound for the Clippers, facing RHP Troy Watson (1-0, 1.98) for the Mud Hens.
