The Columbus Clippers scored three runs in the eighth inning against the visiting Iowa Cubs Tuesday to win the series opener 7-6. The Clippers’ comeback in the eighth featured five bases on balls, two sacrifice flies, and no hits. Here are our three takeaways from Tuesday’s game:

1.    Ralphy Velazquez continues to hit well for Columbus. The #1 prospect for the Cleveland Guardians has had a great second half of the season. He was the International League’s Player of the Week in the third week of August. On Tuesday, he went 2-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. The sac fly brought home the Clippers’ final and ultimately winning run.

2.   Clippers’ reliever Ryan Borucki has found a home in Columbus after a nine-year career in the Big Leagues. The 32-year-old right-hander has appeared in nine games for Columbus since being designated for assignment by San Francisco at the end of May. In 7.2 innings of spot relief, including a scoreless inning Tuesday, he has allowed only one earned run while striking out seven. He played for Toronto, Seattle, and Pittsburgh before his stint with the Giants.

3.   September 1st means MLB call-ups. Two players, a position player and pitcher for each team, move to the parent club from the team’s farm system. In the case of the Cleveland Guardians, the duo elevated on Tuesday were Clippers’ utility infielder Daniel Schneemann and pitcher Carlos Hernández. The Guards were required to “select the contract” of Hernández because he wasn’t on their 40-man roster. Schneemann is on the 40-man, so he was “recalled”.
