In their first contest under interim head coach Laurent Courtois, the Columbus Crew topped New York City FC 1-0 in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match Wednesday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. The Black & Gold will host Orlando City SC in the next round after the FIFA World Cup break. Here are our three takeaways from Wednesday’s match:
1. Max Arfsten continues his solid play for the Crew, recording the match’s only goal . He took a pass from Nariman Akuhndzada and, with a stop-and-start move, connected from just inside the top of the box. The midfielder, who is a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team, owns a team-best nine goal contributions (five goals, four assists) across all competitions this year. Has he become the go-to guy?
2. How did Courtois feel after getting a win against NYCFC, especially after giving up two early goals and losing to them at Yankee Stadium on May 10? “It’s incredible. So happy for the guys, for the Club and for me. It’s nice. Like you said, we were feeling bad about not only the loss but the way we lost over there. To make it right tonight in front of the fans that way was really good. Really proud of the spirit.”
3. Goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen recorded a clean sheet, his third with Columbus (two in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; one in Leagues Cup). He actually did not have to record a save because the Black & Gold’s effort on both ends of the pitch outpaced the Pigeons. Columbus had possession of the ball nearly 60% of the time and outshot their opponents 14-5.

The kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. and will be aired on Apple TV. The Black & Gold’s next match will be at home on Wednesday, July 22 when, guess who, New York City FC returns to Columbus.
