The Columbus Crew never had a lead in their match at Orlando City Saturday, but they did tie the game twice before giving up the winning goal at the 89′ mark to fall 3-2 and make the possibility of making this season’s playoffs more distant. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s tough loss for the Black & Gold:

1.    Columbus had more shots on goal (24-18) than Orlando. Was Lions’ goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau the difference in the match? Crew interim head coach Laurent Courtois said, “We certainly arrived a lot of times in front of Orlando’s goal. We couldn’t convert the way we wanted. Crépeau had a great game. What I told the guys is I was impressed with (their) performance.”

2.   The Crew’s goals came from Taha Habroune in the seventh minute to tie the match at 1-1 and Brais Méndez, who knotted things at 2-2 in the 53rd minute. Habroune has now scored two goals in 20 MLS contests, while Mendez has three scores in just 10 league matches. The top three goal-scorers this season are either gone or out for the season: Diego Rossi (6), Wessam Abou Ali (5), and Max Arfsten (4).

3.   What’s the Crew’s mindset going forward? Taha Habroune weighed in, “We still want to go for playoffs. I’m very sure every single person in the locker room and on the staff believes that we have the capabilities to win the games we have left and do enough to make the playoffs. But I mean, yeah, I would say for sure make the playoffs. And obviously we still have the Open Cup final that we very much want to win.”

The Black & Gold are back on the pitch this Wednesday when Charlotte FC comes to ScottsMiracle-Gro Field for an MLS tilt. Charlotte beat Dallas 3-2 at home Saturday to move into the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. With their loss in Orlando, the Crew are in 13th place in the East, seven points out of a playoff slot with five matches left to play in the regular season.
