Clippers' Bo Naylor swings at the plate

The Columbus Clippers gave up six runs to the Iowa Cubs before getting on the board and fell 13-6 in a game in which they were never competitive. All five pitchers who climbed the mound for the Clippers gave up runs in the loss. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s game:

1.    Saturday’s loss was a combination of bad performance in all phases of the game. None of the pitchers performed well in the second straight game of allowing 13 runs. The quintet gave up 17 hits and walked seven. The defense committed two throwing errors, both leading to an unearned run. The offense managed nine hits and rallied a bit to score five runs in the final two innings, but Columbus batters struck out 10 times on the day.

2.   Maick Collado was back in the Columbus lineup Saturday. You remember him. The 23-year-old skipped over Double-A to take a Columbus roster spot on April 26 when the Clippers needed bodies. No one expected a lot from the inexperienced infielder. All he’s done is get at least one  hit in all nine games in which he has played, including two hits against Iowa Saturday. He has an impressive 11 RBIs so far.

3.   The big news out of Cleveland on Friday was that the Guardians acquired perhaps the best defensive catcher in the Big Leagues, San Francisco’s Patrick Bailey, in a trade for Akron starting pitcher Matt Wilkinson and a draft pick. One of the backstops for the Guards had to go and that was Bo Naylor, who was optioned to the Clips. Naylor last played for Columbus in 2023.

Columbus and Iowa will wrap up their six-game series Sunday with a contest beginning at 2:08 p.m. EDT. LHP Ryan Webb (0-3, 7.09) will get the ball for the Clippers. The I-Cubs will counter with LHP Ty Blach (2-2, 6.11).

Columbus will travel on Monday to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the Saints beginning Tuesday with a game at 7:37 p.m. EDT. The Clippers’ next home game is on Tuesday, May 19 against Louisville.
