The Columbus Clippers took a big lead in the top of the first inning at Lehigh Valley Thursday when Bo Naylor hit a grand slam, his fifth Triple-A home run of the season. The IronPigs came back to win the game 9-8 with two hits to begin the bottom of the ninth inning. Here are our three takeaways from Thursday’s contest:
1. After Columbus scored four runs in the first inning off former (as of June 15) Clipper Kolby Allard, the Clips’ starter, Austin Peterson, gave up three in the bottom half of the frame and was pulled from the game. After that, Tommy Mace went 3.1 innings and allowed three more runs on four hits and two walks. Ryan Webb calmed things down for 2.2 innings, but Daniel Espino gave up a run in the eighth. Trevor Stephan than ceded hits to the two hitters he faced in the ninth to take the loss.
2. Down 8-7 going to the ninth inning, the Clippers battled to score a run to tie the festivities before falling in the bottom of the inning. With one out in the Columbus half, Joe Lampe and Milan Tolentino each doubled to knot the score at 8-8. In a recent trend, the Clippers only struck out five times in the game, giving themselves more chances by putting the ball in play.
3. In what has been a whirlwind this season with moves up to Cleveland and back to Columbus, outfielder Petey Halpin and relief pitcher Codi Heuer were recalled by the Guardians Thursday, while C/OF Cooper Ingle returned to the Clippers after his seven games with the parent club. Ingle struggled in his MLB debut but now has had a taste. It will be instructive to see his response upon returning to the Columbus lineup.

With the win Thursday, Lehigh Valley took a 2-1 lead in the series. The teams have three games remaining before the International League’s mid-summer break. The first of those three is Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
RHP Rorik Maltrud (2-0, 3.82) will climb the hill for the Clippers, while Lehigh Valley will counter with RHP Andrew Painter (0-0, 1.80). Painter, 23, has struggled this year with the Phillies in his 14 appearances, 12 of those starts. However, he has been solid in two outings with the IronPigs.
