The #5-ranked Ohio State football team returned to Ohio Stadium Saturday for a Big Ten tilt with the Maryland Terrapins. Jeremiah Smith, Bo Jackson, and the OSU tight ends all scored twice as the Buckeyes won 45-16 to go to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in conference play. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s game:
1.  Once again, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith made the case that he is the frontrunner for this year’s Heisman Trophy. Against the Terps, the junior had four catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns. During both scoring plays, he showcased his ability to sprint past the secondary along either sideline. With every game now, he continues to add to his Ohio State career records: catches (211), receiving touchdowns (38), and receiving yards (3.474).
2.  With the Big Ten showdown looming at Indiana next week, Ohio State held out five key players Saturday to get them as healthy as possible. Wide receivers Brandon Inniss and Devin McCuin, offensive lineman Austin Siereveld, cornerback Jay Timmons, and linebacker Christian Alliegro were all unavailable against Maryland. The absence of Inniss and McCuin allowed tight ends Nate Roberts and Mason Williams to each score a touchdown. Roberts’ score resulted from a 68-yard play.
3.  The Buckeyes did not have a mistake-free afternoon. Quarterback Julian Sayin fumbled twice, losing one, and threw an interception that was returned for a 52-yard touchdown by Maryland linebacker Daniel Wingate. The pick resulted from a missed block on an outside rusher who hit Sayin as he threw. Ohio State also had eight penalties for 65 yards, with seven of the infractions coming in the first half.
Ohio State heads to Bloomington, Ind. for a game against the defending national champions next Saturday at noon. The #6-ranked Hoosiers are undefeated this season, escaping with a 20-17 win Saturday at unranked Nebraska. The teams last met in the Big Ten Championship a season ago, with Indiana coming away with a 13-10 victory in Indianapolis.
