The Columbus Clippers beat the Iowa Cubs 10-5 Saturday at Huntington Park to take a 3-2 series lead. With the game tied 2-2, the Clippers scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break the game wide open. The I-Cubs posted three scores in the ninth, but they weren’t enough. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s action:
1. All of the runs in the Clippers’ big eighth inning came with two outs. The final four in the frame came courtesy of Kahlil Watson’s grand slam homer. It was his 18th long ball of the season. He has now driven in 55 runs for Columbus. Watson sent the ball 360 feet over the right field wall off an 88mph slider from Iowa reliever Tyler Santana.
2. Starter Tristan Denholm went six innings and earned his 10th win of the season, tops for the Clippers. Against the I-Cubs, he allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. One of the runs came on a solo home run from Chas McCormick in the second inning, his 13th homer of the season.
3. Second baseman Tyresse Turner played in his third game with Columbus after starting the season in rookie ball in Arizona. He played 26 games with Double-A Akron before being called up to Columbus. The Cleveland Guardians drafted the 26-year-old in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. The native of Torrance, Calif. played for the University of Southern California.
