The Bishop Watterson Eagles made the almost three-hour trip to Youngstown Saturday to take on the Ursuline Fighting Irish at Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium. The Eagles piled up 34 points in the first half en route to a 41-10 non-conference win. It was the team’s 33rd straight victory, a run which includes two OHSAA Division III state championships.

The driving force for the Eagles offensive attack was running back Caden Mangini. The senior carried the ball for 147 yards and scored three touchdowns. He now has six scores total in Watterson’s three games. Junior quarterback Dash Hoy threw for 100 yards and two scores.

The 10 points put on the board by the Irish were the first scored against Watterson’s defense this season. The Eagles were paced by senior linebacker Kaden Jones, who recorded 12 tackles. Senior defensive lineman Michael Boyle, who was playing in his second game after returning from Slovakia where he won the U20 World Wrestling Championship at 97kg, had 10 stops.

Ursuline is returning to play this season after suspending its 2025 campaign after two games when a lawsuit was filed by a mother of one of the team’s players alleging sexual abuse and hazing. Tony Stephens, a former standout at Kent State, was appointed as the school’s new head coach for the 2026 season.

Watterson’s next game also involves some controversy. The Eagles are scheduled to play Glenville Friday at Ohio Dominican. Following the Tarblooders’ game at Olentangy Liberty a week ago, Glenville suspended 11 players from school and made them ineligible for two games, reportedly related to an incident at Dick’s Sporting Goods where employees indicated that a group of 15 to 20 individuals took more than $4,500 of merchandise. The 11 suspended players have been charged with theft.
