Week Nine of high school football saw a stadium full of storylines develop going into the final week of the regular season.
OCC division titles up for grabs:
– The OCC-Capital title will be decided when Westland travels to Big Walnut, both of whom are 6-0 in division play. The teams were in different divisions last year and did not play.
– Olentangy plays at Olentangy Berlin to decide the OCC-Cardinal. Both teams are 4-0 in the division. Last year, they were 9-1 in the regular season and went three games into the playoffs. Berlin beat Olentangy at home 27-20.
– Olentangy Liberty heads to Olentangy Orange with the OCC-Central title on the line. Orange is 4-0 in the division, with Liberty at 3-1. Last year, Liberty fell at Orange 21-7 in the final week of the season.
– Pickerington North hosts Gahanna in a match-up of teams undefeated (4-0) in OCC-Ohio play. Last year, in Week Ten, Gahanna topped Pick North 35-28 in double-overtime. Both teams then went three weeks into the playoffs.
Trying to keep a clean sheet:
Seven CBUS-area teams are undefeated going into the final week of regular season play: Columbus Academy (vs. Ready at Fortress Obetz), Grandview Heights (vs. Mifflin at home), Johnstown (vs. Newark Catholic at home), London (vs. Urbana at home), Northmor (at Loudonville), Walnut Ridge (at Linden-McKinley), and Watterson (vs. DeSales at Ohio Dominican).
Keep an eye on Grandview and Henry Ohlinger:
Grandview Heights is 9-0, looking for only its second 10-0 season in the school’s 100+ year history. Head coach Jason Peters was there for the first 10-0 season in 2011 and is the winningest coach ever for the Bobcats. Junior RB Henry Ohlinger came into Week Nine with 1008 yards rushing and 18 total touchdowns. Against Lucasville Valley Friday, he had nearly 400 all-purpose yards and six more TDs.
Great bounce-backs from Week One losses:
Both Big Walnut and DeSales are 8-1 going into Week Ten after falling in Week One of the season. Big Walnut lost at home to undefeated Watterson 20-0. Since then, the Golden Eagles have scored no less than 24 points in any game. DeSales fell at Olentangy Berlin 17-10 to begin the season. In the last four weeks, the Stallions have outscored their opponents 119-18.
First wins are always sweet:
Three teams picked up their first wins in Week Nine – Hilliard Darby over Thomas Worthington, Newark Catholic over Lakewood, and Westerville Central over Central Crossing.
